Energy Efficient Cryogenic Transfer Lines
/Tanks with Magnetic Suspension

¡¡¡¡Advanced cryogenic transfer line/tank technology is needed for future spaceport/in-space cryogenic systems for storage, transfer and control of cryogenic propellants, to provide coolants that will improve operational efficiency, safety and reliability. The use of magnetic levitation in cryostats for terrestrial and space applications opens the possibility to significantly reduce heat leaks and prolong the storage times of storing cryogens, thus offering the potential of extending the lifetime of missions or reducing the overall launch mass.
¡¡¡¡AMAC has investigated the feasibility of developing an ¡°Energy Efficient Cryogenic Transfer Line with Magnetic Suspension¡± for NASA¡¯s cryogenic systems. The innovative transfer line has been successfully demonstrated for the first time in the world. It offers the potential advantage of extending missions, saving cryogens, or reducing the overall launch mass to a given mission. In the phase I projetct, two demo modules of the cryo-transfer line have been designed and constructed.

¡¡¡¡In the phase II project, AMAC continued working on further optimizations to improve the designs and performances of the Cryo-Maglev transfer lines analytically and experimentally. One full sized prototype has been designed, constructed and cryogenic tested at the NASA Space Kennedy Center.
